As a chronic over-packer, the words “carry on” historically aren’t in my vocabulary. Regardless of if I’m heading out of town for two days or two weeks, the moments before I head to the airport include sitting on my suitcase struggling to get all 49.9 pounds of its contents zipped in. But a recent trip—two weeks in Italy that included lugging my overweight suitcase around the entirety of the country—made me realize that, at long last, it was time for me to evolve. My personal Everest was ahead of me: packing for a trip using only a carry-on.

The first step? Developing a packing strategy that included pieces I could re-wear in different ways throughout my trip. While that might mean that the shoes I’d ordinarily pack for that one specific outfit didn’t make the cut, a little extra planning allowed me to pack less, but somehow make me feel like I’d brought more. For the first time, I was able to put together outfits that worked for anything on my itinerary—from an afternoon of exploring to an al fresco dinner—without overstuffing my suitcase.

Heading on a trip soon? Scroll on for a week-long outfit plan that’ll allow you to leave your checked bag at home.

Exploring a museum or heading out on a walking tour? Easy shorts and sneakers are your go-to. Add a slim-fit tank, a breezy button-down, and simple earrings to the easy base for a no-fuss outfit that’s comfortable, polished, and ready for whatever the day throws your way.

When the itinerary calls for a quick spritz in the sun, a versatile sundress is a must. This ultra-flattering A-line midi pairs perfectly with minimal sandals and a shoulder bag that can carry everything you’ll need as the day rolls into night.

Every vacation has that one marathon day: out early, back late, nonstop exploring. Linen pants, a versatile top, and comfortable sneakers are the trio that’ll keep you cool and stylish from coffee runs to sunset views.

There’s nothing quite like discovering a gem you’ll get to say, “Thanks, it’s from [insert desintation]” about. For a day of browsing boutiques and local markets, opt for elastic-waist pants, an airy tank, and slip-on sandals that’ll keep you comfy and ready to pivot from shopping to lunch to wherever the day takes you.

Dinner outside in a city you don’t live in? That’s the dream. Keep it breezy with a knit tank, a relaxed midi skirt, and leather sandals. It’s the kind of outfit you’ll be glad you wore, especially when the camera inevitably comes out.
